Manny Being Manny

Manny Being Manny
Actors and actresses all have their own ways of creating comic effect based on the roles they are given by their director. It is interesting to see how people use their personalities as their advantage in order to cause someone to laugh. Through the daily life of “The Modern Family”, Rico Rodriguez’ depiction of Manny uses childish irony, feminine uniqueness, and a relationship paradox in order to create a comic effect.
Manny acts extremely childish at some times, yet speaks as if he is a grown adult. Such as when he talks about his crushes, “She’s like a dream, wrapped in a wish, poured into jeggings.” In the real world you would not hear a kid of his age speak like this. Also, the fact that he is so young but has mature interests causes comic effect, for example, “Her name is Whitney. I met her in the online book club. We both like the vampire fiction and the romance of eternal life.” Whenever Manny talks about his crushes and girls it is humorous because he talks as if he is a grown man, yet acts like he is a child.
Also, Manny creates comic effect because he is very feminine. He makes very feminine remarks especially during his mascot routine when he says, “Who’s hot? We’re hot!” Also, he says many things that it seems like females would say, “I notices some lovely teens down by the kids’ club, maybe we can find a nice spot near them by the pool and send over a couple of virgin maitais. They may be interested in two sophisticated men like us.” Let’s be honest, who says things like that? Manny also has a very feminine voice which causes the watcher to laugh at his expense.
Furthermore, Manny has a paradoxical relationship with his stepfather Jay. He seems to have a very weird relationship with his stepfather. Jay treats Manny like he is a lot older then he is, which in turn causes Manny to act older towards Jay, like when he says “Jay, I’ve learned a few things in my 12 years. Don’t skimp on lines. Don’t compliment a teacher on her figure. And when it comes to my mom, never ask questions I don’t want the answers to.” Also, something else that creates a comic effect is the competition between Jay and Manny’s biological father. The two constantly seem to fight and compete to see who is better, when ironically Manny couldn’t care less who is better.
Manny uses many different ways to create a comic effect. He has his own childish ways to make the audience laugh. All in all, characters must have their own ways of making someone laugh, and Manny uses very unique ways.

  2. i like your quote choice, really highlights manny's character. i also liked how you noticed the conflicting nature of his maturity and innocence. deep stuff. over all, i would suggest using more formal language and have everything stated in a "matter-of-fact" sort of way. i shall help you in persuading your audience. gud job dough. :)
